My internship at the International Affairs Department of the Regional Council of South Ostrobothnia has been an enriching experience. I have undertaken a diverse range of responsibilities that have not only enhanced my skills but also given me a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of regional administration.
During my time, I have developed various social media contents and maintained the Council’s English website. I collaborated with various stakeholders and initiated their social media campaign. Moreover, I attended networking events and webinars, carefully documenting key insights.
On February 21st, 2024, amidst my day-to-day work, I was presented with an exciting opportunity: a presentation on the crucial topic of immigrant integration in South Ostrobothnia region. Policymakers from all 18 municipalities in the region were present at a regional board meeting, where my presentation took place. They expressed keen interest in my presentation and provided valuable feedback.
My presentation, titled ”Seinäjoki ja minä”, explored a vital regional challenge: the employment struggles of immigrants. I emphasized these obstacles and presented tangible solutions to tackle them.
My presentation addressed the complexities of immigration integration, focusing on the challenges faced by immigrants in finding jobs, obtaining housing, and navigating Finnish work culture. The analysis went beyond identifying these issues, in which I devised creative and practical solutions, demonstrating analytical abilities and commitment to find workable outcomes.
To help integrate migrants in the region, I suggested the following:
- Streamlining the hiring process and simplifying paperwork to increase job opportunities for immigrants.
- Implementing temporary housing solutions and establishing integration support centers to address housing challenges for immigrants.
- Introducing a ”Working Life Culture Certificate” program to bridge the cultural gap between immigrants and employers. This program, which can be facilitated through collaboration between diverse stakeholders, seeks to promote diversity and awareness.
This presentation not only impressed the board members but also showcased the Regional Council’s dedication to open communication and creating a welcoming atmosphere. My involvement reflects the Council’s commitment to empowering young professionals and finding ground-breaking approaches to regional challenges.
My experience at the Regional Council has been incredibly fulfilling. I have been able to contribute to important initiatives while learning valuable skills.
As I progressed through my internship, I continued to support initiatives that embody the Council’s commitment to regional development and inclusivity.
This experience will be a huge advantage for my future career in Finland. I am grateful for the International Affairs team for their immense support and the entire Regional Council of South Ostrobothnia for the opportunity.
