My name is Alia Tabassum, and I come from Pakistan. Moving to Finland was not a sudden decision — it was a dream that quietly grew over time.
For many years, I heard friends talking about studying abroad in countries like the UK and Canada. Their experiences inspired me, but at that stage of my life, I was already professionally established with a stable job in Pakistan. Studying abroad felt like something I had missed.
Then one day, I met a family friend who runs an educational academy. During our conversation, they asked me a simple question:
“Why don’t you go abroad for your studies?”
That moment stayed with me. It felt like the right time to finally reconsider a dream I had once put aside.
They introduced me to several study destinations — Canada, the UK, Sweden, and Finland. While exploring these options, I became particularly interested in Finland. I applied and was fortunate to receive admission offers from both Finland and Sweden.
After careful consideration, I chose Finland — and that decision marked the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life.
Starting a New Life in Seinäjoki
Arriving in Finland as an international student was both exciting and challenging — especially with children. Adjusting to a new country, culture, and education system was not easy in the beginning.
However, over time, I have learned so much — not only academically but also personally.
My studies have helped me develop:
- Professional skills
- Cultural awareness
- Communication abilities
- Confidence in working in an international environment
Living in Seinäjoki has played an important role in this journey. Compared to larger cities like Helsinki or Tampere, Seinäjoki offers a calm and peaceful environment that makes it easier to focus on studies and family life.
Initially, I thought I might eventually move to Helsinki. But after spending more than two years here, my perspective has changed completely.
Seinäjoki now feels like home.
Looking Ahead
Today, my children are well-adjusted, and I feel settled both socially and academically. What once felt unfamiliar has become part of everyday life.
After completing my degree, my goal is to build my professional future here and contribute to working life in Finland.
This journey has taught me that sometimes dreams don’t disappear — they simply wait for the right time.
And for me, that time was Finland.
